Our Nation In Distress
Jung’s Red Book As
A Guide To A Sane Future
Carl Jung faced a disintegrating world in 1913. His Red Book, written and painted then but only published in 2009, records his dreams and fantasies from that time. How did Jung’s unconscious imagery respond to and portray the impending catastrophe of World War I? The workshop will explore two main images from the record Jung left us in the Red Book–and their relevance to his understanding the historical, social, and moral collapse of the first decades of the twentieth century. These two images are of Abraxas and the goddess figures that played a large role within his inner experience as the world fell apart. Likewise we will explore the presence of these important images in contemporary art today to see how they may continue to speak to us and our attempts to comprehend a nation in distress.
